This is a thief's primary weapon. If you are skillful, and lucky, you may sneak up behind your victim and cause major damage before they are aware of your ill intentions. More skilled adventurers may learn a similar trick known as circling for use in pitched battle. Note that you can't backstab with just any old weapon, it has to be specially designed to pierce.
